Bacula 17.0 major release expected this summer

The Bacula Community release manager has shared an estimated timeframe for the publication of the next major version of Bacula. It may arrive during the summer 2026 period (July–September).

On the Bacula-Users mailing list, Eric Bollengier, the Bacula Community release manager, responded to a question from a community member about the current status of Bacula 17.0. In a short reply, he noted that the code is not yet ready to be published, but expressed hope that this will happen this summer.

The status of the code is not yet ready to be published. I hope it will be the case this summer.

This is a positive signal for the Bacula community and an important indication of the direction of Bacula Community development. It is not yet a full release announcement, but it does shed some light on the near future of the next major version. Early mentions of work related to Bacula 17.0 had already appeared on the Bacula-Users mailing list in February this year, during a discussion about a FileSet resource option.

Looking back, Bacula Community has long followed a careful, long-term release cycle, with new major versions appearing relatively rarely. The previous major version, Bacula 15.0, was released in February 2024, while the latest release from the 15.0.x line, Bacula 15.0.3, was published in March 2025.

The current gap is still noticeably long, even against this release model, and may naturally raise questions about the pace of further work on the project. In this context, the information about a possible Bacula 17.0 release this summer is especially significant. It shows that work on the next major version is ongoing and that the Bacula community may be approaching an important stage in the project’s development.

Bacula News will continue to follow further information about Bacula 17.0.
