Bacularis 6.4.0 introduces simple restore for large environments

Bacularis 6.4.0 introduces a new simple restore mode designed for environments containing millions of files and directories. The release also adds a job log toolbar, new API capabilities, improved CLI help, and a range of internal enhancements and bug fixes.

On July 28, 2026, a new version of Bacularis, the web interface for Bacula, was released. Version 6.4.0 brings several new features and internal improvements. Its most important addition is a simple restore mode, now available in the restore wizard alongside the existing mode based on BVFS (Bacula Virtual File System).

The new mode differs from BVFS restore primarily in how the file list is prepared. It may be particularly useful in environments containing millions of files and directories, where preparing BVFS data can take more time. Simple restore does not provide some of the advanced capabilities available with BVFS, such as detailed file information or the ability to select a specific version of a file. In return, it may perform better when browsing very large directory structures. Instead of preparing the BVFS cache, the new mode uses the standard Bconsole restore interface.

Another important addition is a toolbar displayed alongside Bacula job logs. It provides features including log pagination, changing the sort direction of entries, copying log contents to the clipboard, saving them to a file, and refreshing the log. It also shows the current status of the job. Pagination was introduced in response to a feature request submitted by a community member.

The release also modernizes internal modules responsible for session management, API communication, and the operation of the restore wizard. These changes are not directly visible in the interface, but they are intended to make further development of the application easier.

The Bacularis CLI scripts, including task and plugin, have also become easier to use. Their help messages now provide more detailed descriptions of required and optional parameters, together with usage examples.

New endpoints for managing simple restore sessions have also been added to the Bacularis API. Existing job and job log endpoints have been extended with support for pagination, sorting, and passing multiple values for job level and job type parameters.

The new version also includes numerous bug fixes. One highlighted in the release notes resolves an issue with listing volumes in an autochanger when the Volume Retention directive is set to a very large value.

Bacularis 6.4.0 is a substantial release that combines new user-facing features with the modernization of the application's internal components.

Before upgrading, users are encouraged to review the complete release notes and the project's recommendations.
